The 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery served as infantry combat troops in the Overland & Petersburg Campaign in 1864-65 and took heavy casualties incl Cold Harbor, Petersburg & at Winchester & Cedar Creek. An original Civil War Enlistment Certificate issued at Fort Trumbull Connecticut , Dec 28, 1863, attesting that Addison Cook is mustered into the Service of the United States for 3 years, and sgd by Lt Orin OH Knight as recruiting officer, 2nd Connecticut Artillery. Lt Orrin H Knight of Salisbury, Ct, who signed his enlistment died of wounds received June 22, 1864 in the first Union Assault on the Weldon Railroad, Petersburg, Virginia.
