Civil War Discharges for 2nd Minnesota Soldier Wounded at Chickamauga & Kennesaw

These two discharge documents are for James M. Thornton (sometimes spelled Thorton), who served in the 2nd Minnesota Infantry from September 1861 through July 1865. Records indicate Thornton was twice woundedat Chickamauga and at Kennesaw Mountain.

The first discharge was issued in December 1863 at Chattanooga and lists the reason for discharge as Reenlisting in the Veterans. It is signed by Captain David B. Loomis of Thorntons Company F, as well as Lieutenant Samuel J. Dick of the 18th US Infantry, assistant quartermaster for the 3rd Division, 14th Army Corps. The second discharge was issued when the regiment mustered out at Louisville in July 1865. It is signed by Captain Jacob Kline of the 16th US Infantry and Captain John S. Livingstone of the 2nd Minnesota. Very good condition on both documents, with light foxing and toning. Creased at the original folds. Each measures about 8 1/2 x 11.
