Civil War Letter Describes Battle With Canister, Soldiers At Fredericksburg

Offering a four-page, ALS, from Samuel Francis, Camp near Suffolk, May 10, 1863, to his sister Nancy Bishop. Francis mentions that Union forces are fighting at [the Second Battle of] Fredericksburg, which occurred a week before this letter was written.

That battle was part of the Chancellorsville Campaign, which ended in a significant victory for Robert E. Lee, but took the life of Stonewall Jackson, who was hit by friendly fire. Francis writes, I now sit down to wright a few lines to you hoping that these few lies will find you enjoying as good health as it leaves me at present. I should have wrote you before, but I wanted to wait till this fight was over so that I could tell you about it. A week ago today we crossed the river and engaged with the enemy & after having a skirmish we fell back to the river, and in the afternoon we went up again with one brass piece & engaged them & after having a smart skirmish they opened with grape & canister on us & then we had to fall back to the river & that night we crossed and went to our camp & the next morning we heard that the Rebels had all left & I tell you that we was all glad of it.

I hope that when you get this letter that you will hear that this Rebellion has ended. There is a good deal of heavy fighting going on now & I hope that it may end the war. I hope that all of our forces at Fredericksburg will have good luck & whip them there & I think they will if nothing happens. I suppose that all the farmers are planning now. They are planting here very fast & some of the corn is up high enough to hoe.

Tell Darling that I would like to be home this season & help him get his haying in but do not think I shall for it is most to farTell me whether you have received any papers or not from me. One small hole extending through all four pages. A very good Civil War letter, written on patriotic stationary with the text.
