The First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, the "Essex County" men fought most of the War as Infantry and took part in the Battle of Spottsylvania where almost 400 men and officers were killed or wounded, including Sergeant Robert P Mansfield of Lynn, Mass who died of his wounds. The unit also suffered heavy losses in the Petersburg Campaign. With 700 some casualties wounded and killed by War's End. An original Civil War Letter from Mr OD Clough, at Linwood Lodge, IOGT, Lynn, Massachusetts, August 9, 1864 "To the Friends of Robert Mansfield" bereaving the loss of " Brother Mansfield in defense of his Country".
