CIVIL WAR PHOTO 1/9 TINTYPE of SOLDIER MUSICIAN with OVER THE SHOULDER HORN

Here is a great photo of a Union musician with his horn perched next to him. These'over the shoulder' horns were created by Union Musical troops during the Civil War in the belief the horn projected behind the shoulder could be heard more clearly by the troops marching behind them. This technique proved unsuccessful however, as marching soldiers could generally hear only the drums and the use of these horns was discontinued after or near the end of the war. 2.5 x 2 inches.
