James L Thompson served in the 104th New York, a hard fought unit, and was captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania July 1, 1863 in the Railroad Cut fight. Thompson was taken to Andersonville Prison, Georgia where he died and is buried. An original letter from Johnson at Camp near Bellplane (Virginia) Jan 20 (likely 1863), to his father Lathen Johnson, Nunda Station (now Dalton) Livingston County, New York, sending him part of his 4 months pay he finally received.
