Civil War Soldier Letter Samuel Pierce 6th NY Heavy Art Winchester VA Dec 2 1864
Civil War soldier letter, Sgt. Samuel Pierce, 6th NY Heavy Artillery, Winchester VA December 6,1864, 4 8x9 pages to brother (George) in bold ink easy to read, presume he (George) had a good time at Thanksgiving, tells him of their dinner, hard tack, coffee and fresh meat, turkeys were sent to army but where they went no knows, our company draws rations for 100 men, we received two turkeys and two chickens to distribute among us, more on the turkey debacle. A number of sergeants made lieutenant, Eugene Magness made quartermaster sergeant who invited commissioned officer to turkey dinner on Thanksgiving day, where did he get the poultry, why from our rations of course. Much more on rations and distribution, says it shows just how small some men are, Thanksgiving day was wonderful but it was thought the johnnies would make an attack, so we had to wear our gear and have muskets stacked in each company street, but nary an attack, spent time fixing up our tent, building up our camp but don't think we will spend all winter in Winchester.

Don't expect much fighting except between cavalry. Talks about election votes, we gave them to a man from New York State canvassing for G.

McClellan, one remarked that he (McClellan). Ha d 200 good Democratic votes, ha ha here is where the laugh comes in. Last page is a list of ll men and what happened to them, some resigned, one wounded, one killed, one died and several promoted. Excellent letter signed in full name Samuel B. Did archival repair on two 1 inch tears on middle fold, otherwise VF.
