Civil War soldier letter, Pvt William E Vanauken, 107th New York Infantry, Camp near Sharpsburg, Maryland (phonetic spelling) December 2, 1862, two 8x12 inch pages. He was killed in action at New Hope Virginia GA on May 25, 1864, two and half months after he was promoted to sergeant. Actually 2 letters on one both to the brother and sister. Have not received any letters from you, Frank has gone out on picket, first duty he has done in a while but is getting fat again.

Ezra, I sent for another box, I want you to be sure to send my fiddle, if you don't I will come up there and make a fuss, if I had the fiddle, I could take comfort, may have to go on picket tomorrow, Ez if they won't let you send the box, send the fiddle. Wishes Richard would come, if he did, I would show him something about that he never saw, we are 4 miles from the battlefield (Sharpsburg) I can show him where 500 is buried in one grave, when I get my pay will have my picture taken at Sharpsburg (have included as an attachment), eat one meal of good pancakes. 2nd Letter on page 2, we have it in our heads we will be home by the next 4th of July, we have to drill this afternoon, send more stamps, we have just been on battalion drill, have a bad cold, I feel good and eat well except citrons and huckleberries, send some more honey, more content.

Very small portion of bottom of each sheet does not show because our scanner does not not hand near legal size documents. William did some caligraphy on him's name at bottom of the second page. Residence was not listed; 21 years old.

Enlisted on 8/7/1862 at El, NY as a Private. On 8/7/1862 he mustered into "D" Co.

NY 107th Infanty He was Killed on 5/25/1864 at New Hope Church, GA Promotions: Corpl 4/1/1863 (Estimated day) Sergt 3/5/1864. For all Civil War and paper items. It depends on to what country.
