The 16th Vermont Volunteers saw their first action and sole at the Battle of Gettysburg where they charged the flank of Kemper's Brigade near the copse of trees during Pickett's Charge, July 3, 1863. Private Joseph M Martin was killed in action during the assault and is buried at Gettysburg National Cemetery. He reports that the 12th Vermont took a rebel to camp they caught while on picket. We are going to Alexandria after new arms, then will get his turn to go on picket duty to keep the rebels back where they belong. Direct your letters to me at Washington, DC 16th Regiment, Co.
