Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin is an historic city on the Upper Mississippi River, site af Fort Crawford an important Frontier Post during the Fur Trade era. When the Civil War broke out the Fort served to recruit and muster Wisconsin Volunteers, and also was a major Union Army Hospital.
The 25th Wisconsin began the War in Minnesota during the Sioux War of 18632, then took part in the Vicksburg Campaign, The Atlanta Georgia Campaign, and Sherman's March to the Sea and through the Carolinas. Private Nathan B Aldrich of Sparta, Wisconsin served in Company D of the 25th, 1862 to 65, postwar.An Original Madison, Wisconsin QM Receipt for a haversack, knapsack and canteen turned in by Private Aldridge May 16, 1865. The 8 x 5' ptd/ink Receipt is signed by Captain JH Brown, and is affixed on a 10 x 11 section of Muster Out Paper for Aldridge, issued at Prairie Du Chien, May 14, 1865, and also signed by Major Joseph H McArthur. Major Joseph Hunter McArthur was a West Point Graduate who commanded Cavalry troops on the Frontier before the War. Captain John Harrison Brown was a notable St Paul, Minnesota pioneer, who served as captain in the us Volunteers 1864-until the end of the War.
