Early 1800's Pre Civil War U. S. Soldier's Wood Canteen

Early 1800's Pre Civil War U. Welcome to Auntie Q's! Auntie Q's specializes in estates and items that are fresh to the market! This wonderful canteen has been hiding away in an attic for many years! It is approximately 17 3/8" in diameter x 2 3/4" wide.

I feel confident that there are fewer and fewer of these finds out there! The canteen is hand painted with U. On one face and has the initials of the soldier hand carved with an ornate outline on the other.

The same side as the soldier's initials is impressed with J. Which I suspect is the mark of the craftsman that made the canteen, a definite artistic piece that deserves acknowledgment of the maker. The canteen is overall in wonderful condition. The leather strap appears to be original to the canteen and is all there, however it does need careful restoration to preserve it. The canteen could use a good restorative cleaning. I leave this up to the ultimate owner considering that everyone has their individual preference to the degree of this!
