The book provides standardized, detailed instruction related to various aspects of soldier life and training. It presents an introduction and discusses drill and training related to the recruit, the company, the regiment, the march, the camp, guard and guard mounting, rations and the mode of cooking them, field fortifications and the standards to construct them, artillery use, artillery tactics and employment, a manual for light artillery, a manual for heavy artillery, and ammunition. This is one of the initial manuals that was used at the start of the Civil War.
THIS BOOK IS IN FINE CONDITION This original, first edition, book is in exceptional condition. The book comes protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket to help keep it that way (see photos #2).The book is handsomely bound bright, textured, red covers with impressed, gold lettering on the spine, the image of a soldier guarding a campsite and arms on the front cover, and decorative, impressed highlights on the cover. The exterior is super bright, clean and sharp.
The gold lettering and image are in exceptional condition and bright. The exterior has no bumping, rubbing or discernible edge wear.
The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. There is an antique signature dated 1861 on one the front, inside cover.I have not evaluated this signature to determine if it was to a Civil War solider. The book has no other writing int it. It has no smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboards or other markings.
This is not an ex-library book. The book has solid binding throughout; it has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The book contains 10 plate illustrations as well as other charts. This is the nicest copy of this book I have seen. This is an excellent condition, first edition, Civil War manual for Volunteer Soldiers.
