Enlisted in New Cumberland, Cumberland County, July 22, 1861, mustered into federal service that day at Philadelphia as a private with Co. I, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry, and promoted to corporal January 1, 1862. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 24, 1863, at Wauhatchie, Tennessee, and shot in the right shoulder at the battle of Resaca, Georgia, on May 15, 1864. Returning to duty, he was promoted to 1st sergeant on September 1, 1864, to 1st lieutenant April 23, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.
