Antique Civil War sixth plate ambrotype collodion positive on glass photograph of a partially identified young boy Confederate solider in a North Carolina Infantry uniform. The ambrotype is in a half case frame. Behind the ambrotype photo is another photo in black and white of a gentleman most likely in his twenties. Marked in pencil on the back of the black and white photograph is Sam Hoyle, Morganton, NC, PO Box 474.
The black and white photograph is date stamped April 2, 1934. I believe this is a photo of a relative of the solider; possibly a grandson.
There were several soldiers with the surname of Hoyle who served in the N. Infantry of Lincoln County during the Civil War including a Samuel J. Hoyle, who served in the 34th and 49th Regiments, who could possibly be the young soldier in the photo. Morganton (the city written on the back of the black and white photo) is about 40 miles from the city of Lincolnton (the seat of Lincoln County).
Also, Morganton was possibly part of Lincoln County during the Civil War. This ambrotype is a great Civil War collectible and a fantastic subject for further research.
