Enlisted on 11/4/1861 as a Private. On 12/30/1861 he mustered into "D" Co. OH 73rd Infantry (date and method of discharge not given) Promotions: Corpl 4/1/1862 Private 5/27/1862 (Reduced to ranks). When Joel Franklin Nichols was born on 24 January 1835, in Ohio, United States, his father, Harmon Nichols, was 27 and his mother, Lucretia Nichols, was 23. He married Mary Elizabeth McKendry on 21 April 1855.

They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Center Township, Morgan, Ohio, United States in 1850.

He died in 1892, at the age of 57, and was buried in Vinton, Benton, Iowa, United States.
