Far more Union and Confederate soldiers died or were disabled by disease than in battle during the Civil War. An Original Civil War " Disability for Discharge" , issued for David Bailiffe of the 21st Indiana for "camp exposure" at Baltimore, Md, Oct 26, 1861.

The Discharge is sgd by Captain Jacob Hess, Company Commander, a Martinsville, Indiana notable officer and by by Unit Surgeon Ezra Read. The Discharge notes that Private Baliffe is a Morgan County Indiana resident. The Discharge signed on reverse by Asst Adjutant General Daniel Tompkins Van Buren (a Brevet Brigadier General) and by US Surgeon Charles Page, (noted Medical Chief for the 2nd Army Corp at Appomattox).

Comes w service info- the 21st Indiana became the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery but by 1862 reverted to Infantry & fought at Baton Rouge & the Louisiana Red River Campaign. 1p 8 x 11 ptd/ink, w eagle illus. Minor age stains and edge wear, VG.
