Chapin was an accomplished 19th century artist and illustrator from New York whose work appeared in publications such as Harper's Weekly. He was also a noted Civil War field artist who produced the famous sketch "The Surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, April 12, 1865, " which is housed in the Library of Congress. As you can see, this painting -- which is signed and dated, 1884, by the artist, depicts a Civil War soldier mounted on a horse, and is entitled Waiting for the Word. " The painting has a site measurement of 8.5" by 10, and is nicely framed and matted under glass.
