LG CIVIL WAR Soldier MEMORIAL / MOURNING Photo in Orig Frame, Full Plate Tintype
Very Rare Antique Civil War Soldier Photo, Nicely Tinted, IN ORIGINAL PERIOD WOODEN FRAME. DESCRIPTION: Great original large antique CIVIL WAR SOLDIER PHOTO. Shown in uniform, wearing kepi. Appears to be a full plate tintype, but I cannot be sure and it could be a paper photo. I believe it is a tintype, however, due to the finish, tone, and the. Look of the "brass" on his uniform that has been gold "painted" on for highlight (without taking it apart it's hard to confirm if it is a full plate tintype or a paper photo). Definitely full page size, however, and most likely a full plate tintype. Really nice photo with good detail, including gilt tinted buttons and kepi insignia. Also appears to have his cartridge box strap visible across his chest, between his buttons.
It is likely a blow up of a smaller tintype or CdeV photo. THIS WAS OCCASIONALLY DONE IF THE SOLDIER DIED DURING THE WAR, TO PROVIDE A LARGER SIZED MEMORIAL TO HANG ON THE WALL FOR FAMILY MOURNING.
That is almost certainly the reason that this one was made. Nicely framed, and complete with wires on the back, ready to hang on the wall as soon as it comes out of the box.
The photo is in a beautiful, nicely finished original antique hard wood frame. Made with really nice antique square-head nails.
The type made during the 1850's and still popular during during the Civil War. It really makes the photo stand out. Still has the original glass and the original wooden backing board. Frame measures 14" x 11 1/2" on the outside. Open area inside measures 8 1/2" x 6". Photo and frame are both in excellent condition.
