A period inscription in the lower right corner reads Charleston. The heavy thud of a mortar broke the stillness. A single shell from Fort Johnson on James Island rose high into the still-starry sky, curved downward and burst directly over Fort Sumter. Confederate batteries on Morris Island opened up, then others from Sullivans Island, until Sumter was surrounded by a ring of fire. In the foreground are two cannons and artillery shells.
One of the gun carriages has been sabotaged. The albumen print measures 9.5" x 7.25" and is mounted on a 13.5" x 10.5" board.
The mount shows some wear but the print is crisp with good contrast.
