This scarce 1st edition was owned by American Civil War Union Soldier, Joseph Sewell Smith of Bangor Maine and has his name bookplate to front inner board. Unfortunately, at some point this book was gnawed at by a mouse to upper corners and upper spine face. Also, covers with a few scuffs, and there is an ink stain to lower backboard toward spine end. 170 pp and 6 illustrations at end of vol. Joseph Sewall Smith (27 November 1836 - 25 January 1919) was a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War, advancing from private to lieutenant colonel.
He was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers when released from active duty in July 1865 and later awarded the Medal of Honor in May 1892 for his actions while leading part of a brigade at the October 1864 Battle of Boydton Plank Road in Virginia. I strive to describe the item accurately and provide photos to help convey the condition. Thanks for your interest in this item!
