NICE CIVIL WAR ATWELL Reading, Mass. SHAVING STROPE & RAZOR, WITH RARE SOLDIER'S IDENTIFICATION, 5th Maine Inf. Nice original Civil War soldier's shaving strope. Has flat wooden handle atwend zinc drawer inside the body that pulls out to reveal original razor. Strope is covered with leather to sharpen the razor on.On the other side are the instructions for use and the maker, John Atwell, South Reading, Mass. Also has a nice patriotic eagle!
Best part of this is that on the side it is faintly stenciled in gold Co. I have had this in my collection a long time. Believe it came with the effects of a soldier named POTTS (I think George, based on stenciling on a couple of other items). This is a nice personal soldier's item and would be a great addition to any collection or display.....
Especially for someone interested in Maine soldier items. Hard to find good identified items anymore. In very good condition for its age. Has no damage that I can see. Nice that it still has the razor.
