The image shows a young & handsom Union Soldier in Uniform. Information about the Union Soldier is provided above, as per the taped notation attached to the back of the frame.The Pennellograph is mounted in its elegant original period gilt carved walnut frame with its original gold-gilt matting. It is extremely rare to find Vintage Civil War-Era and Post-Civil War-Era pennellographs in this very good to mint condition. The Pennellograph tintype is a unique colorization process patented by L. Newell of Philadelphia - Hand applied layers of color was skillfully painted on the tintype image. The result is often very pleasing and surprisingly engaging, particularly this one with this soldier's deep stare and gaze.
Condition Statement: I believe the Plate is in Excellent Condition, as is the surrounding gold-gilt matting. Although each sale is unique, I believe this high value speaks to the quality and rarity of this type of photographic image This is a 135+ year old image as such it has the warm and normal patina as has acquired those tiny minor condition you would expect.
More on the Full-Plate Pennellograph. This is a full-plate hand-colored tintype of a Union Private Soldier killed during the skirmish at Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. Google, Pennellograph and you can see that these are rare tintypes that have been hand-colored. The surface of the image was stenciled and then layered with hand colored tinted carbons. Each pennellograph was sealed due to the fragile nature of the image surface. The original paper label is still on the back (someone taped it years ago) with a patent date of 1875. SO, what we have here is a full plate tintype taken during the war, then later hand colored in the pennellograph process.Has original backing, glass, and frame.
