Hess diary from the Civil War. Exterior a little ragged and field worn.

Most entries from January to November 1865 are full. There seems to be a picture of a Reb prisoner with his hands on his head and without clothing. Visited 84th reg in manchester. Marched into Richmond and had a review of the 5th and 2nd corps. Reviewed 14th and 20th corps in Manchester. On guard in Richmond guarding pontoon bridges. Rambled through the city and seen where the rebels made their cannons. Went to city point by tug boat. Built a raft out of pontoon bridge wood. Hitched the raft to the tug and rode into Richmond. Tore up the bridge and traded lumber. Rats and mosquitos bad (in richmond). Captain sends 7 miles out into Virginia countryside to setle a fus. On patrol in town picking up negros to police street-july 31.

Went and got a haversack. Went and got a young ladys trunk that was stole.

Went to charlottesville and the lynchburg. Laid in a barrell in lynchburg.
