These battlefield illustrations were made for Frank Leslie's Civil War period newspapers.
Frank Leslie's wife acquired his papers after his death in 1880 and published the engraved illustrations in the large format, two-volume work called The Soldier in Our Civil War. Assisted by the most Notable Generals and Commanders of Both Sides. With an Introduction by Robert B. Beath, past commander-in-chief Grand Army of the Republic.
