This is a book about American soldiers from the revolutionary war through the American Civil War and it provides an wonderful testament to the American volunteer soldier. The book discusses military education at the U. Military and Naval Academies as well as the combat actions during several wars, but is predominately a Civil War history. The Author, John Alexander Logan (1826 1886), was an American soldier and political leader.

He served in the Mexican-American War and was a general in the Union Army in the American Civil War winning the Medal of Honor. Following the Civil War, he served the state of Illinois as a Senator and was an unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This handsome, antique, First Edition book is in excellent overall condition and is protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket. The book is bound in original teal-colored pictorial cloth covers with impressed gilt letters and the embossed pictorial images in black of American soldiers throughout history on the cover and spine. The impressed lettering remains bright and sharp. The embossed images are clear and sharp as well.

The exterior has no bumping. It has light rubbing and just a touch of edge wear. The interior is nicely presented. The pages are clean and in excellent condition. There is a prior owner signature, city, state and date written on one of the front, blank pages; the book has no other writing in it. The pages are free of any foxing, smudging or stamps. There is a pasteboard on the front, inside cover as shown.

This is not an ex-library book. The binding is solid throughout the book, but the front hinge is cracked and lightly repaired.

Both hinges are solid and the book has no looseness or lean. The book has floral-printed end pages. This is an handsome, clean, and solid. The book features a handsome, full-color lithograph with original tissue guard, and is wonderfully illustrated with over 25 illustrations.
