US ARMY CIVIL WAR INFANTRY SOLDIER HOLDING HIS RIFLE MUSKET - TINTYPE PHOTO GUTTA PERCHA UNION CASE - DUPLICATE FOUND IN THE US LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. This photo and case has a duplicate. The duplicate photo and case are found in a collection sponsored by the US Library of Congress. However, if you go to Google and use the following: "US Library of Congress Civil War Flickr, " on page one of the collection one will see its duplicate.

An outstanding photo collection of the Civil War presented by the US Library of Congress. The unidentified soldier had more than one photo taken to be given to different people.

Notice the fine differences in detail between the two photos. A person had to sit still for a number of seconds while the lens cap was removed. After one photo was taken, the person probably re-positioned himself and got comfortable for another photo to be taken.

Some of the fine differences are: holding the rifle in a different position, bayonet up verses bayonet down; his fingers are grasping the rifle differently in each photo; creases in his uniform are different, especially the left arm. Two same but separate photos of the same individual. The case also seems to be the same except the one photoed by the Library of Congress is in better condition.

PLEASE NOTE: The items in the last photo were provided. The picture was provided so as to give reference to the information mentioned above. The US Library of Congress photo duplicate is top left. The photo is in a Gutta Percha case and is Union made. Great photograph of a Union infantry soldier holding his rifle / musket. The gold frame has a beautiful design. The case measures approximately 3 1/8 X 3 5/8 X 3/4 inches. The gold frame measures approximately 2 3/4 X 3 1/4 inches. The photo and frame are in excellent condition.

However, the case has some issues. The front lock is broken off.

The case still locks tightly but one has to push down on the internal brass mechanism for it to open. One corner of the case has also been repaired. Please see the close-up photos for overall condition. Would make an excellent addition to your collection!
